Koomson Does It Again! When the past catches up to the present, the book shifts into the deeper past, through Eve’s diary entries. The changing viewpoints allows Koomson to give us a perfect understanding of the feelings each character has, and the relationships between them.

Anyone who is expecting this to be chick lit – as well they might from the title, front cover and the blurb on the back – will be disappointed. It sets it all up for the ending, it explains everything that happened, and it was the catalyst for everything in the book, basically.

I was genuinely hooked on the mystery and I has to keep reading to see how it turned out.

I think Koomson balanced it nicely, but it did still make me feel slightly uncomfortable, just through the choices Eve had to make.

A Tesco-value version of Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca”. Libby has always wondered whether she could live up to the love Jack felt for his first wife. I thought the way DK brings Eve into the present time was very clever.

Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. The subject in it self is interesting – Libby the second wife of Jack is constantly thinking about if her husband Jack loves her as much as he loved his wife, Eve, who passed away in a “accident”.

Libby has a nice life with a gorgeous husband and a ue home by the sea. It is well-written with engaging characters, each of whom has a distinctive yet realistic voice. Libby and Jack are involved in a terrible car accident where Libby has to be cut out of the car.


The first section of the book shifts between the present the accident scene and the past Befors courtship of Libby, told from the perspective of both Jack and Libby. When fate intervenes in their relationship, Libby decides to find out all she can about the man she hastily married and the seemingly perfect Eve.

She works as an exotic dancer, an escort and a prostitute to make ends meet. But since my sister kept telling me to read it and I quite enjoyed another Koomson book, I becore happy to give it a go.


People just don’t think like that. Libby is marr Dorothy Koomson’s early books were quite clearly in the chick-lit category, written from the perspective of a Black British woman. This isn’t a book I would ordinarily choose to read. Whilst Jack’s sections in the book are the smallest, he features strongly in both women’s stories. The diaries, while well structured, are not generally a form of story telling I’m fond of.

All that aside, I enjoyed the novel more than I expected with regards to the story itself. The Woman He Loved Before is a complicated novel. Not with my body: Libby questions their whole relationship.

Much like her, I could understand completely why she was desperate to know everything there was to know about Eve; who wouldn’t be in her position? My only slight sadness was that we only saw a child briefly in the story, when Libby’s nephew Benji appears.

I need to buy a copy of both books.
